Europe is now Malaria free: WHO

WHO declared Europe completely free from Malaria.

According to the world health organisation, Europe has become the world’s first region to wipe out malaria with zero cases reported last year.

World Health Organization in it’s World Malaria Report 2015 said yesterday that the number of malaria cases fell from 90,712 to zero between 1995 and 2015 in the countries of European region.

The agency said in the report that only 179 cases of malaria were reported in six countries in 2010. The region was last declared malaria free in 1975.

Until the end of World War II, it was common in southern Europe, including Portugal, Italy, the Balkans and Greece.

There were 438,000 malaria deaths in 2015 around the world. Most of the victims were children under five with the vast majority in Africa.
