Bombay High Court on Friday ordered the demolition of the controversial Adarsh Society in the plush Cuffe Parade area of Mumbai.
The high court also upheld an order of environment ministry’s that said there was no Coastal Regulatory Zone (CRZ) clearance for Adarsh Society.
The scam was exposed in November 2010 when an filed a complaint with the department of defence, government of Maharashtra, Mumbai civic authorities and alleged irregularities in the allotment process and approvals.
In 2011, in a report, India’s apex auditor CAG said: “The episode of Adarsh Co-operative Housing Society reveals how a group of select officials, placed in key posts, could subvert rules and regulations in order to grab prime government land – a public property – for personal benefit.”
Former Maharashtra chief minister Ashok Chavan and a dozen other accused have been charge sheeted by the Central Bureau of Investigation in the case.
Ashok Chavan had to resign from his post in 2010 immediately after US President Barak Obama’s visit to Mumbai.
