<title>First hurdle cleared: Rajya Sabha passes women's reservation bill</title>
<link>http://www.merisarkar.com/news/First hurdle cleared: Rajya Sabha passes womens reservation bill</link>
<description>vice president and the chair of the rajya sabha hamid ansari declared after the vote, i think the bill is passed by the required majority. 186 rajya sabha mps voted in the favour of the bill while only one voted against it.

before the vote the house had to suspend seven unruly members for the rest of the session. two of them were evicted forcefully by the marshals.

in a surprising development a key upa ally mamata banerjee decided to abstain from the voting. tmc has two members in the house. 15 members of the bsp walked out of the house just before the voting.

tmcs abstention from the voting is being seen as a crack in the upa coalition. mamata banerjee, while announcing her decision, said that she was not consulted.

however, as expected, the main opposition party bjp and left parties voted in favour of the bill. in a surprising development all the seven rajya sabha mps of jdu voted in the favour of the bill after the appeal of the seniour party leader and bihar chief minister nitish kumar.

however, the passing of the bill witnessed stiff opposition from some political parties - namely sp, rjd and lok janshakti party.

the bill proposes the reservation of 33 per cent seats in the parliament and state legislatures for women.

now government would try to move the bill in the lower house. congress president sonia gandhi said in an interview to a news channel that she is not sure whether the bill will be tabled in the same session or not.

however, she reiterated her and her partys commitment to the bill.

245-member rajya sabha has an effective strength of 233. the bill required the backing of at least 155 members and the upa had the clear support of 165 in the run up to the event.

the bill proposes to reserve for women 181 seats out of the 543 seats in the lok sabha and 1,370 out of a total of 4,109 seats in the 28 state assemblies.

<description>women working in public sector companies and banks are more satisfied than their counterparts in private sector. this is the finding of survey conducted by assocham.

out of the 773 working women participated in the survey, majority said that they would like to do jobs in psus.

majority of working women gave priority to psu sectors like banking, power and petroleum emphasising that these sectors provide satisfying nature of work.

participants say that public sector companies and banks offer reasonably good annual income with job security, convenient working hours and besides healthy work environment.

while, women employed in bpokpo feel lack of personal growth and development as they perceived less room in decision making process, no flexibility in work timings and lot of pressure to achieve targets, it said.

the study also said that working women in the sectors like agro-based industries, economic and social organisation, hospitality, it, media and entertainment were also not satisfied.

<title>Maoists want to overthrow Indian state by 2050: Home Secretary</title>
<link>http://www.merisarkar.com/news/Maoists want to overthrow Indian state by 2050 Home Secretary</link>
<description>union home secretary gk pillai on friday said that maoists wants to overthrow indian state in next 40-50 years through armed struggle.

this is also for the first time that a seniour government official has admitted that maoists may be receiving help from ex soldiers.

while addressing a seminar in new delhi he said, the maoists might be getting the help of some former soldiers in carrying out subversive activities.

however, he said that it is their long term plan which they want to achieve in next 40-50 years.

mr. pillai said, the overthrow of the indian state is not something they are willing to do tomorrow or the day after. their strategy, according to a booklet they circulated, is that they are looking for at 2050, some documents say in 2060.

union home secretary was candid enough to admit that in the past decade maoists were slowly able to build their capabilities to wage armed struggle against the state.

he also admitted that now maoists are in a position to harm many sectors of indian economy.
