Vigil increased along international borders on the eve of Independence day
Vigil has been mounted along international borders to pre-empt any terrorist strike during Independence Day celebrations even as searches conducted by security men on Friday led to recovery of powerful IEDs in Assam and Jammu and Kashmir.
In the national capital, thousands of gun-toting security personnel are on the streets keeping a hawk-eyed vigil while an impregnable ground-to-air security apparatus has been put in place, especially near Red Fort where Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will unfurl the tri-colour.
A major disaster was averted in Assam with seizure of seven powerful IEDs from the city and another from Bongaigaon district after intelligence inputs that ULFA and NDFB activists might try to disrupt the celebrations.
A report from Guwahati said security has been put on high alert throughout the state, which has witnessed attacks on railways, oil refineries and vital installations almost every year around Independence Day and Republic Day by ULFA in support of its demand for sovereignty.
In Jammu and Kashmir, security forces recovered seven kgs of IED attached to a solar panel from Rajouri district, foiling an attempt by militants to trigger blasts.
