Cabinet meeting chaired by the PM cleared the bill
The Cabinet has approved the Women's Reservation Bill on Thursday providing 33 per cent reservation to women in Parliament and State Legislative Assemblies.
Center plans to table the bill in the ongoing budget session of Parliament.
The Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh met in New Delhi on Thursday evening and discussed the Bill. The bill was sent to union cabinet by the standing committee and the cabinet approved it without any changes.
Previous UPA government had introduced the bill in Rajya Sabha but could not get it passed due to stiff opposition from some parties.
Officials say that the business advisory committee would decide the time when the bill will be introduced in the Loksabha.
The controversial Bill has been delayed for past 12 years as many of the opposition parties like the Samajwadi Party and Janata Dal (United) had been demanding a quota within the quota for OBC women.
