The country pays homage to Mahatma Gandhi, last preserved remains immersed in Indian Ocean

The President, the Vice President and the Prime Minister today led the nation in paying homage to the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi on his 62nd death anniversary.

President Pratibha Devi Singh Patil and Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh laid wreaths on his Samadhi at Rajghat in New Delhi. Several functions are being organised throughout the country to mark the occasion.

Mahatma Gandhi's great grand daughter Ila Gandhi immersed his remaining ashes in Indian Ocean in South Africa. As per media reports some 200 people gathered on this occasion. A family friend of Bapu had brought a part of Bapu’s ashes to the country with him.

Ila Gandhi has also immersed some of the remaining Bapu’s ashes in Arab Ocean in Mumbai in 2008.

An anti leprosy fortnight and Leprosy seal campaign was also launched by the President Pratibha Devi Singh Patil in New Delhi.
