TRAI seeks 10 digit landline numbers
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has recommended to shift to an integrated numbering scheme for fixed and mobile services. In the latest recommendations released today on 'Efficient Utilisation of Numbering Resources', TRAI has proposed to have 10- digit number for both fixed and mobile phones.
According to an official release, this would enough numbers will be available to cater to the expansion of existing services and introduction of new services for the next 30-40 years.
The existing National Numbering Plan, 2003, designed for 750 million connections, including 450 mobile connections was to last till 2030. But the mobile numbers crossed that mark in 2009 itself, pressing for an urgent review to facilitate continued availability of numbers with minimum disruption to any service.
TRAI proposes to shift to the integrated numbering scheme by the end of next year.
