Strict action against hoarders: Prime Minister
Under immense pressure from the party, allies and opposition over the issue of price rise Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has issued a stern warning to black marketers and hoarders.
In a meeting with Chief Ministers to discuss the issue in New Delhi on Saturday he said that the worst of food inflation is over and the situation will normalise soon.
He said that the provision of Essential Commodities Act would be invoked against hoarders of food grain to deal with the situation of artificial scarcity.
"The worst is over as far as food inflation is concerned. I am confident that we will soon be able to stabilise food prices. Food prices have softened in recent weeks and I expect this to continue." Dr. Manmohan Singh said.
He said that the prospect of good crop and increasing linkages between the domestic and global food prices would help in stabilising the food inflation.
Driven by rising prices of essential food items like pulses and vegetables, food inflation touched a decade high of nearly 20 per cent in December before moderating a little bit in January.
Various Chief Ministers present in the meeting aired their views and suggested various ways to contain the inflation.
Do you think that in today's highly fractured and competitive politics the Parliament will, in near future, be able to function properly and constructively?
