Congress President Sonia Gandhi has been appointed as the Chairman of the National Advisory Council (NAC).

She will hold the rank and status of Union Cabinet Minister with immediate effect. Four years ago she quit the post in the wake of the office of the profit controversy.

Her appointment will be co-terminus with the term of the National Advisory Council. However, the term of the other members of the council will be for a period of one year. It can be extended.

This time the government has decided if an MP is appointed as the member of the council s/he may not be able to draw the remuneration and other allowances other than the compensatory allowance.

The term of the first NAC ended on March 31, 2008.
