President confers Indira Gandhi peace award on Gates Foundation

The president today conferred the Indira Gandhi prize for Peace disarmament and development for the year 2007 on The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

The award is in recognition of its exemplary humanitarian and philanthropic work across the world and in India.

The President Mrs. Pratibha Devisingh Patil who conferred the award said that Bill Gates after transforming the world of computers becoming the richest man is now on a mission to transform the lives of people through his foundation. She appealed to the people to come forward and show their knowledge, generosity and commitment to the higher cause of serving humanity.

Speaking on the occasion the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh said that Bill Gate is the first business leader to receive this prestigious award. Dr. Manmohan Singh said that by sharing his wealth with the marginalised sections of society he has inspired many business leaders to join in the fight against poverty.

In his acceptance speech Mr. Bill Gates spoke of the partnership of his foundation with India for different causes and was optimistic that in the next five years India will be able to achieve the goal it has set for improving the health standards of the people. He also suggested several steps in this direction.
