The Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh leaves for Canada today to attend the Toronto G20 Summit. Relations between the two countries will receive a further boost as the Dr. Singh meets his Canadian counterpart Stephen Harper at the end of the Summit on Sunday.
Ahead of Dr. Manmohan Singh's visit, Canada have tendered an apology to the victims of the Air India Kanishka bombing for the institutional failings and administrative flaws that led to the tragedy 25 years ago.
Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has also recommended setting up of an independent commission to be established to determine the compensation to be paid for the Kanishka tragedy victims. The highlight of Dr. Singh’s Toronto visit includes the signing of a civil nuclear cooperation agreement with Canada.
The pact will be on the same lines as of the India-US nuclear deal. Secretary West in the Ministry of External Affairs, Vivek Katju said, another agreement on Social Security with Canada is also on the anvil. He also said, MoU’s on Mining, Higher Education and Culture are also likely to be signed during the bilateral talks.
