Barely a week ago both the leaders had the lengthy discussion on Afghanistan and Pakistan during their meeting in White House last month. However, in a reflection to India's growing stature at world stage the US President decided to telephone Indian Prime Minister to discuss the same topic one more time before making a major policy announcement of increasing troops in Afghanistan.

President Obama is calling close allies of United States including Russia, United Kingdom, China, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India before the announcement.

Indian Prime Minister's Office said in a statement, "U.S. President Barack Obama called the Prime Minister this morning. In a brief conversation, the two leaders discussed the situation in Afghanistan and the further steps that could be taken to bring peace and stability in the country."

The two leaders also discussed the forthcoming summit on Climate Change in Copenhagen. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh told the U.S. President Obama that India would play a constructive role in the Copenhagen negotiations and looked forward to a successful outcome.
