Nuclear terrorism is a global threat: Prime Minister

Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has said that global efforts to prevent proliferation of nuclear weapons have not succeeded and the world now faces the threat of nuclear terrorism. He said that it adversely impacts India's own security.
Dr. Singh welcomed the US President Obama's willingness to reduce the role of nuclear weapons in the security strategy of the country and desire to hold a yearly summit to discuss the issues of nuclear safety. He said that it is a positive step in the direction of complete nuclear disarmament.
Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh said in New Delhi on Tuesday, "The specter of nuclear terrorism is a formidable challenge facing the entire global community. At the United Nations General Assembly India has been sponsoring a resolution calling for measures to address this threat."
"It is a matter of regret that the global non-proliferation regime has not succeeded in preventing nuclear proliferation. Its deficiencies in fact have had an adverse impact on our security," he said.
He said that global non-proliferation efforts should be universal, comprehensive and non-discriminatory and targeted towards complete nuclear disarmament.
Referring to India's comprehensive export control regime to prevent the proliferation of sensitive nuclear technologies he said, "India is proud of its non-proliferation record and is committed to global efforts to prevent the proliferation weapons of mass destruction."
Dr. singh said that India is a nuclear weapon state and a responsible member of the international community and reiterated India's commitment to voluntary, unilateral moratorium on nuclear testing.
