No more loan waivers for farmers: Finance Minister
Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee ruled out writing off loans taken by farmers, saying that the full impact of failure of monsoon is yet to be assessed.
Mr. Mukherjee said, there is no such proposal, when asked if the government is considering a fresh debt waiver scheme to give relief to farmers.
The UPA government had last year announced a nearly Rs. 71,000 crore rupees farm loan waiver scheme to offer relief to farmers, especially the small and medium ones who were unable to access fresh loans due to non-payment of dues.
Even as one fourth of the country reels under drought, Mr Mukherji said , the full impact of failure of monsoon is not yet clear and expressed hope that the country will be able to achieve six per cent plus economic growth during the current fiscal.
