Nepal's Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal has resigned. After thirteen months in power he announced his decision to resign from the office in a televised address to the nation he took the decision to pave the way for forging consensus among the major political parties to complete the peace process and drafting of the new constitution.
He said despite having majority support in the parliament, he is resigning to create a congenial atmosphere for political parties to arrive at a consensus as the country is passing through a difficult transitional phase in its history.
Mr. Nepal said that he had made sincere efforts and sought cooperation from the political parties to come to a consensus to resolve the political impasse and given a one month period to come to consensus which ended today without any headway.
Mr. Nepal came down heavily on the Nepali Maoists for creating obstructions in parliament and on the streets through anit-government protests during the 13 months of his government pushing the country towards uncertainty and instability.
He claimed that despite the consistent opposition from the Maoists, the government has made significant achievements in the national security, industrial, road infrastructure, youth and women welfare, agriculture and communications.
