With an aim to boost the availability of domestic LPG gas in rural and hinterland part of the country, the Petroleum Ministry has launched Rajiv Gandhi Gramin LPG Vitarak Yojna (Village LPG Distributor Scheme) in Rajasthan.
Petroleum Minister Murli Deora and Rajasthan Chief Minister, on Sunday formally launched the scheme from Lakshman Garh town of Sikar district in Rajasthan.
Mr. Gahlot lauded the petroleum minister for selecting Rajasthan to launch this national scheme.
Murli Deora, on the occasion, said that under the scheme the government aims to provide five crore more LPG connections in the country in the next five years.
He said that UPA government is committed to provide clean and hygienic fuel in rural areas on a priority basis and RGGLY is aimed in that direction.
"Six dealers were selected through a process of draw of lots in full public view for rural locations in the district of Sikar, Jhunjhunu, Nagaur and Churu of Rajasthan," the ministry said in a statement.
"Similarly, draw of lots were also held for 44 locations in the state of West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand."
Mr. Deora said that with the increased availability of LPG in rural areas the dependence on coal and wood will be reduced.
He said that this scheme would not only provide a clean and convenient fuel to villagers but also help in generating employment opportunities in rural areas.
Petroleum Minister Mr. Murli Deora also informed that the ministry has set up a committee to explore the possibility for a Refinery in the state.
Union Ministers Dr. PC Joshi and Mahadev Singh Khandela were also present on the occasion.
