Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan was present at the test run of the India's first ever monorail mass rapid transport system in Mumbai. The monorail would eventually run between Jacob Circle and Chembur.
A consortium of Larsen & Toubro and SCOMI Engineering of Malaysia, is building the 19.54-kelometer line.
However, the trial only took place on a 108-metre stretch between Wadala and Bhakti Park Complex as the electrification required for the trial was complete only in this stretch.
Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority, MMRDA officials hope that the Jacob Circle-Chembur route will be complete by May 2011. The Monorail will be a substitute of local trains and other road transportation in Mumbai.
According to the government, initially, 14 Monorails with four coaches each will be available to serve customers. The capacity of monorail will be 500 passengers.
