Trinamool Congress and BSP today scored spectacular victories in West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh Assembly by-elections. BSP won 9 out of total 11 assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh that went into by poll. BSP five seats from Samajwadi Party including the prestigious seat of Itawa - considered stronghold of Yadav politics.
SP and BJP could not win a single seat in the by poll. Congress won one seat and one seat went to an independent candidate.
It was a double blow to the SP supremo Mulayam Singh as his daughter-in-law and wife of Akhilesh Yadav Dimple lost Firozabad seat to the party's arch rival Raj Babbar by an overwhelming margin of more than 85 thousand votes.
Both SP and Congress made it a prestige issue to win the Firozabad seat. Rahul Gandhi campaigned for the Congress candiadate Raj Babbar. On the other hand SP lined up all the star power right from Jaya Bachchan, Jaya Prada and Sanjay Dutt to campaign for Dimple.
In the far eastern part of the country Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee's party Trinmool Congress won 7 seats out of total 10 that went into by poll.
TMC ally Congress one more seat for the alliance. Ruling CPM failed to win a single seat in West Bengal, once considered an impregnable bastion of the Left. The only consolation was that its ally Forward Bloc won one seat and one seat went to an independent candidate.
The Congress also put up an impressive show in the assembly by-elections bagging 10 of the 31 seats that went to polls.
