In Uttar Pradesh, the Mayawati government has banned strike in state universities and degree colleges for the next six months. The government order covers all the 12 state universities and 450 affiliated colleges and other government and associated degree colleges.
The state government took this decision given the agitation by teachers in the past two months. These 18,000 teachers are demanding the payment of all arrears of sixth pay commission that came into effect from January 2006.
The government has taken this decision under the Maintenance of Essential Services Act and State Universities act.
The agitating teachers of universities and degree colleges have even threatened to boycott annual examinations scheduled to start from March.
Several practical exams scheduled this month have already been cancelled due to agitation by the teachers.
Officials say that the decision has been taken to ensure that academic session does not get affected due to strike by the teachers.
