He is the senior most infantry officer in the country and presently heading the Eastern Command of Indian Army and will take over his new post after General Deepak Kapoor retires on March 31 this year.
The Defence Ministry issued the order after the Cabinet Committee on Appointments his name for the top post.
He is the third generation officer from the Rajput regiment and was commissioned into the Rajput regiment in June 1970.
He commanded the same unit when it was deployed along the LoC. He has vast experience in counter insurgency operations, high altitude and mountain operations.
He graduated from the Defense Services Staff College, Wellington as well did the Rangers Course at Fort Benning in USA and the US Army War College located at Carlisle.
