Karunanidhi appoints younger son Stalin as Deputy CM
DMK Supremo and Chief Minister Karunanidhi on Friday appointed his son MK Stalin as the Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
The DMK chief, who appointed his 55-year-old son to be his deputy, entrusted to him the portfolios of Industry, General Administration, District Revenue Officers and Minority Welfare until now held by him.
The governor's office announcing his appointment said in a statement that Stalin will also continue to hold the portfolio of Rural Development and Local Administration.
His elevation came a day after his elder brother M K Azhagiri was sworn in as Union Chemicals and Fertilisers Minister in the UPA government.
Reports of his elevation were doing rounds in the state since February this year when M Karunanidhi underwent through a major surgery for back pain. Due to his bad health Stalin was largely responsible for campaigning during the recently held Loksabha elections.
He shot to fame in 1975 when during the emergency he courted arrest under MISA. He currently holds the office of president of youth wing of the party.
