Jaitapur Nuclear Power project gets environment clearance

Project cleared with 35 riders
The 9900 Megawatt Jaitapur Nuclear Power plant project in Maharashtra has been given final clearance by the Union Environment Ministry on Sunday. Speaking at a press conference in Mumbai, Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh said, his ministry has finally given its approval with 35 conditions and safeguards. He said, economic growth, fuel mix diversification, global diplomacy and environmental protection were the key objectives while giving the go-ahead.
State Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan has said, the one lakh crore rupees project is the first of its kind where such a huge quantity of power would be generated. He said, there would be six units of 1,650 MW, each producing nearly 10,000 mega watts of electricity. Nuclear Power Corporation of India-NPCIL would be collaborating with French company Areva for executing the project.
Mr. Prithviraj Chavan said all the people who would be affected by the project would be given due compensation and would be properly rehabilitated. Jaitapur Nuclear Power plant is the India's first plant under civil nuclear agreement with France and will be commissioned by 2017-18.
