Indian origin scientist wins this year's Nobel for chemistry

Indian American scientist Venkatraman Ramkrishnan has won this year's Nobel Prize for his research in the field of Chemistry. 57 years Venkatraman shares this prestigious award with two other scientists - American Thomas A. Steitz and Israeli scientist Ada E. Yonath.

The academy said in a statement: "The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for 2009 jointly to Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge, United Kingdom. Thomas A. Steitz, Yale University, New Haven, CT, USA and Ada E. Yonath, Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot, Israel."

The academy gave the reason to select them for the prize in a one liner statement: "For studies of the structure and function of the ribosome."

Venkatraman was born in 1957 in Chidambram a district famous for its temple in southern Indian state Tamilnadu.

The award prize of US$ 1.4 million will be equally divided between all the three scientists.
