India successfully testfires anti-missile interceptor missile

India on Monday has successfully testfired an interceptor missile from Wheeler Island in Bhadrak district of Orissa coast. The interceptor missile was fired at 10.08 am in the morning from Launch complex number 4 of the Wheeler Island and hit the target in the air accurately.
The interceptor missile is of 7 meter length and can hit the enemy target within a radius of 50 km in the air.
This is the fourth time that the DRDO has tested its intercepting missile. The three previous tests were conducted on November 27, 2006, December 6, 2007 and March 6, 2009 from Wheeler Island.
After the test DRDO scientists said that all the systems – the missile, radars, other sensors and equipments performed satisfactorily during the test.
The Interceptor Flight Test was witnessed by Dr. VK Saraswat, Secretary (Defence, R&D), Shri Avinash Chandar, Director, Advanced Systems Laboratory (ASL), Hyderabad, Dr. K. Shekhar, Chief Controller, DRDO, Shri VLN Rao, Programme Director, SK Ray, Director, Research Centre Imarat (RCI), Hyderabad, Shri P Venugopalan, Director, Defence Research & Development Laboratory (DRDL), Hyderabad, SP Dash, Director ITR and Users representatives’ Air Marshal PK Barbora, Vice Chief of Air Staff and Maj Gen VK Saxena, ADG, Army Air Defence, Indian Army.
Defence Minister AK Antony spoke to DRDO Chief Dr VK Sarswat over phone and congratulated the scientists for the successful test.
More than 3,000 people were evacuated near Chandipore and Dhamra for the firing.
