India plans to test interceptor missile system this week
India's premier defence research organization DRDO is preparing for a test of anti missile system very soon. The test would be carried out Interim Test Range (ITR) in Wheeler's Island off Orissa's coast. It would be third test of India's indigenously developed two layered interceptor missile system.
"Senior scientists of the DRDO along with the field staff of ITR have been working round the clock to make the test successful," DRDO sources said.
"If the range coordination exercise, which requires cent per cent elimination of error, goes according to the plan, the test may be conducted towards the end of this week," the sources said.
With two successful test-firing of India's own interceptor missile behind them, DRDO scientists are fine- tuning it for another trial in which the missile would be able to hit an 'enemy' missile of a longer range and even the one coming from a ship or a submarine, the sources added.
In a coordinated exercise, the interceptor missile to be launched from the Wheeler's Island would 'kill' an enemy missile at an altitude of about 80 km over the Bay of Bengal.
