India has strongly condemned the killing of an Indian student Nitin Garg in Melbourne. Nitin hailed from Punjab but he got permanent residency status in Australia.

Nitin was stabbed to death last night when he was going to Hungry Jack restaurant in the city where he was working part time.

However, Australian police was quick to deny the 'race' as a motive for the attack on Nitin Garg.

India's foreign minister has called on the Australian authorities to bring to book persons responsible for the crime at the earliest.

Foreign Minister SM Krishna has asked the Indian High Commissioner in Canberra and the Indian Consul General in Melbourne to closely coordinate with the Australian authorities.

He has also asked them to extend all assistance to the family of Nitin Garg as well as members of the Indian community.
