India and Mongolia sign nuclear cooperation agreement
India and Mongolia have signed a nuclear cooperation agreement. The pact would allow India to explore vast resource of Uranium in that country. The pact was signed in the presence of Mongolian President Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj and Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh.
Mongolia is the sixth country with which India has signed agreements for nuclear corporation after 45 member Nuclear Suppliers Group lifted 34 years old ban on doing nuclear commerce with India last year. India has already signed nuclear cooperation agreements with five other countries France, Russia, US, Kazakhstan and Namibia.
Earlier in the day Prime Minister Dr. Singh held wide ranging discussion with the visiting dignitary.
Speaking on the occasion Dr. Manmohan Singh said, "We have signed Agreements in the field of peaceful uses of radioactive minerals and nuclear energy, health, culture and statistics."
Prime minister said that both the countries have decided to update our bilateral ties to the level of a "Comprehensive Partnership".
India also assured President of Mongolia for its readiness to assist the country in the field of education, particularly in the teaching of English language, and information technology. Prime Minister said, we also attach importance to our expanding defence exchanges and cooperation with Mongolia, including regular joint exercises between our armies. We have agreed to strengthen our cooperation in this area.
Dr. Singh also underscored the value that Mongolian president attaches to his country's relations with India. President of Mongolia Mr. Elbegdorj is in New Delhi on his maiden overseas visit after taking office in June 2009.
