Income Tax team visited IPL head office in Mumbai
Following a controversy over the true ownership of IPL franchises a team of income tax official has visited the head office of the league in Mumbai on Thursday. The team inquired into financial details and share holding patterns of all the franchises of Indian Premier League.

National media quoted government officials in the finance ministry as saying that the team was sent to inquire into various aspects of financing of this super rich sporting event.

Income tax official also gathered information about newly sold franchise IPL Kochi which caused much controversy involving junior external affairs minister Shashi Tharoor and IPL commissioner Lalit Modi.

Government sources say that the objective of the inquiry was to find out whether any illegal or black money is being involved in IPL funding or not.

In a related development in the capital New Delhi opposition parties demanded the removal of Shashi Tharoor from the union cabinet.

CPM asked the government to reconsider various tax exemptions and various other concessions granted to this mega sporting event.

During the day Shashi Tharoor met seniour Congress leaders Pranab Mukherjee and AK Antony in the parliament. He also met the party president Sonia Gandhi to clarify his position on his alleged involvement in IPL through a partner and friend Sunanda Pushkar.

Shashi Tharoor is facing allegations that he had misused authority to help his friend Sunanda Pushkar to get free equity of the value of 70 crore rupees in IPL Kochi franchise.
