A woman diplomat working in the Indian High Commission in Islamabad has been arrested in New Delhi on espionage charges. It is alleged that IFS officer Madhuri Gupta was passing on information to Pakistani intelligence agencies, particularly ISI. Madhuri Gupta, was arrested four days back after she was summoned to New Delhi ostensibly for some preparatory work for SAARC summit to be held in Thimpu.
Madhuri Gupta was working as a Second Secretary working in the Mission for nearly three years, was passing on information from the Mission to her contacts in ISI.
Meanwhile, Ministry of External affairs has confirmed that the official in the High Commission of India in Islamabad had been passing information to the Pakistani Intelligence Agencies.
The statement issued in New Delhi this evening said, the matter is currently under investigation and the Official is cooperating with the inquiries.
The External Affairs Ministry spokesman said that it has reasons to believe that the official concerned working in the Indian High Commission in Islamabad had been passing information to the Pakistani Intelligence Agencies.
The spokespersons said that the matter is currently under investigation. He also added that the official is cooperating with the inquiries.
As per media reports, quoting official sources, Madhuri Gupta has confessed her crime and said that she was introduced to ISI by a Pakistani Journalist and she was not doing it for the sake of money.
