Govt will set up 9 new National Institute of Technology

In order to cater the growing demand for technical education in the country the union cabinet on Thursday approved setting up of 9 new NITs. This time the thrust is clearly on meeting the demand of North Eastern states as 5 out of 9 proposed NITs would be established in these states. 50 per cent seats will in these NITs would be reserved for the students of the concerned state and union territories.
The Cabinet approved this decision in a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh in New Delhi.
These new institutes will be established in Delhi, Uttarkhand, Goa, Pudduchery and five will go to north eastern states - Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Sikkim.
Proposed NIT in Delhi will also cater to Chandigarh. In the similar manner proposed NIT at Goa will also cater to Daman & Diu, Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Lakshdweep. Pudducherry NIT will cater to Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
50 per cent seats of these NITs will be reserved for the students of concerned states and union territories.
The cabinet said in a statement, "The process for setting up of these new NITs will start in 2009-10."
The admissions in these new NITs will be made from the academic session 2010-11. Initially there is a plan to start classes either in campuses taken on lease or temporarily in mentor NITs till the construction of the campuses is completed.
These Institutes will be covered under the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007 making them institutions of national importance.
