Govt to import food items to deal with drought: Pranab
The centre is ready to import food grains to meet the challenges of the drought which has affected 44 per cent of districts spread across the country. Addressing the State Agriculture and Horticulture Ministers in New Delhi today, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said that the government will import whichever commodity is in short supply. The centre has already banned the export of food grain.
While urging state governments to adopt a realistic and pragmatic approach to deal with the drought, Mr. Mukherjee expressed satisfaction that India has developed certain level of expertise to deal with the issue. The Finance Minister assured the states of all the necessary help in dealing with the situation. Mr. Mukherjee added that there is sufficient stock of food grains to meet the challenges.
