Govt. is trying for Warren Anderson's extradition: Home Minister
The government admitted that the Bhopal gas tragedy was not dealt with enough seriousness when it occurred in 1984. Replying to a short duration discussion in Lok Sabha on the issue, union home minister P. Chidambaram said that the successive governments did not take up the matters related to the accident and the victims with the seriousness that it deserved.
Without blaming any government at the Centre during the last 26 years after the tragedy, he urged the members to send a message to the victims that the government has admitted the lapse with guilt and regret.
The Home Minister said that the present government is taking measures to reopen the case to punish the guilty. He said for this, a curative petition is being filed with the proper section of the law to nail the culprits.
The Home Minister informed the House that no charges have been quashed against the then Union Carbide CEO, Warren Anderson. Mr. Chidambaram said that CBI is seeking extradition of Warren Anderson after due legal consultations so that no loop hole is left when such a request is made to the U.S. authority.
