GoM recommends inclusion of caste in census
A Group of Ministers recommended to the Union Cabinet for inclusion of caste in census from biometric stage of enumeration.
The decision was taken by the GoM, headed by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee which met in New Delhi Wednesday evening. Official sources said that the GoM's recommendations will now be taken to the Union Cabinet and the caste headcount may begin in December this year.
The decision comes in the wake of a meeting of the Core group of Congress Party headed by its President Sonia Gandhi.
The Group decided to back the caste based census. The GoM was set up after political parties cutting across party lines in Parliament strongly supported a caste based census during the budget session of parliament.
