Flood death toll reaches 240, Centre assured all assistance to Andhra, Karnataka and Mahrashtra

More than 230 people have died so far due to floods in southern and western part of the country. Karnataka is the worst affected with 137 deaths, followed by Andhra Pradesh with 37 deaths so far.

25 deaths have been reported from western state of Maharashtra.

Floods have caused havoc in these states. Heavy downpour was reported from Maharashtra yesterday triggering the fear of disruption of traffic in Bombay-Goa highway.

Union government is keeping a close watch on the situation of flood in these states and assured them all possible assistance.

Union Home Secretary, Secretary (Border Management) and senior officers of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) are in constant touch with the State Authorities.

The situation is being monitored on round the clock basis by the control room of the home ministry. NDRF personnel deployed are engaged in large scale rescue and evacuation operations and distribution of food, drinking water and other relief items to the affected people in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Army, Navy and Air Force are also assisting in relief and rescue operations.

Center has rushed NDRF and boats from Bhatinda, NOIDA, Pune, Arakkonam(Tamil Nadu) and Mundali (Orissa).

Center has deployed 173 boats in Andhra Pradesh, and in Karnatak 249 water rescue trained personnel and 73 motorized boats have been deployed.
