Sustained public pressure led Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh to say that it's every citizen's right to lodge his complaint as First Information Report with the Police.

Prime Minister said, "Recently concerns have been expressed that very often if people go to register a FIR, there are obstacles that they have to experience, problems arising out of the existence of vested interests."

"I think these are type of concerns which must be addressed. It is the right of every citizen who has a genuine complaint to have an FIR registered," said the Prime Minister.

Political observers believe that Prime Minister's comments assume importance in the wake of allegations from the family of Ruchika Girhotra. Ruchika's family alleged that police refused to register a case against SPS Rathore for molesting Ruchika when they first tried to lodge and FIR in this regard.
