Development of Green Industry is necessary to mitigate effects of Climate Change: India

India has said that in order to mitigate the negative effects of climate change the worold should develop Green Industry. Mr. Ajay Shankar, Secretary, Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, said that "we need to think about pragmatic and realistic approaches to the challenges of climate change and environmental sustainability, and the critical role of innovation and greening of industry."

He was speaking in conference a organized by UN and govt. of Philippine in Manila he reiterated India's stand on climate discussion that any solution has to be equitable. He said, "Equity, the right to development and the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities have to be the basis of our approach."

Mr. Ajay Shankar emphasized that the world need to speed up the development and deployment of green technologies to reap the benefit of economies of scale to bring down the cost.

He observed that globalisation with growing openness to trade and investments facilitates this process. In this context, he also mentioned India's ongoing efforts to reduce energy consumption in energy-intensive industries, development of renewable sources of power like wind power and the decision to launch a Solar Mission.

He was of the view that countries that follow a sustainable pattern of industrial development will be better placed to exploit the new market opportunities created by the shift towards resource-efficient and low-carbon production processes.
