The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has written to the heads of all the scheduled airlines to charge air travellers the tariff at a level which was prevalent in the week ending 6 September 2009.

In the letter, the DGCA said that it has brought to its notice through the websites of airlines, through media reports and through air travellers feedback that scheduled domestic airlines are charging extremely high tariff. Some times, almost three to four times higher on metro routes as compared to those prevalent before September 6, 2009.

The DGCA said, "It is further noted that the cost of operation of scheduled airlines on account have not undergone any significant change in the current week as compared to the earlier week. Under these circumstances, it felt that the tariff being charged by the scheduled airlines were excessive in nature."

The Aviation regulator has asked all airlines to send their compliance to it 'most urgently'. The DGCA has warned the scheduled airlines that any violation of these directives will be dealt with under appropriate law.
