Centre-State cooperation is required to combat terror: Chidambaram
Home Minister P. Chidambaram said that there is a need for the Centre and the States not only to declare their common resolve but agree on a common approach to over come the challenges of internal security. He said that while the States have the constitutional powers with regard to matters relating to public order and police, it has been emphasised that it is the constitutional duty of the Central Government to protect every State against internal disturbance.
He said that at times, some state governments have allowed themselves to bend before insurgent groups making the fight against insurgency much more difficult. Mr. Chidambaram said, he will hold discussions with the concerned state governments and draw state-specific strategies to deal with insurgent groups in the three-most affected states of Assam, Nagaland and Manipur.
On fighting the Naxal menace, the Home Minister said that the Centre will encourage the State Governments to talk to Naxalites both individuals and local units on the condition that they give up their misconceived armed liberation struggle.
