Central water commission to study the special character of 6 flood prone rivers

Central Water Commission has taken up the morphological studies of 6 flood prone rivers i.e. Brahmaputra, Kosi, Gandak, Ghagra, Sutlej, Ganga in reach from Allahabad to Baxar considering the seriousness of the problems.
The commission is using remote sensing techniques in addition to field surveys and collection of related data during the 10th Five Year Plan.
Govt wants to thoroughly investigate the special behaviour of these rivers to prepare the right strategy for flood control.
Problems are aggregating mainly due to large quantity of silt and sediment being carried and deposited in its down stream reaches.
Morphological study of rivers deals with aggradation and degradation, shifting of the river course, erosion of banks, etc. and remedial measures against erosion and other related problems.
