Cabinet approves 50% quota for women in Panchayats
In a historical decision union cabinet on Thursday approved the proposal for a constitutional amendment for enhancing reservation for women in Panchayats at all tiers from one third to at least 50 per cent.
The Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni said this issue was listed in today’s agenda and the cabinet chaired by Prime Minister has approved it. Ms. Soni said that this provision will apply to all the seats filled by direct election, offices of chairpersons and seats and also offices of chairpersons reserved for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
The government will be moving a Bill in Parliament for amendment to Article 243D of the Constitution at the earliest following the approval.
