Chief Justice of India, KG Balakrishnan has opposed the Law Commission's recommendation for setting up of four regional branches of the Apex Court.

Media reports quoted him as saying, "I am not in the favour of disintegration of the Supreme Court."

"Personally I feel the Supreme Court cannot be in any other part of India. This is the highest court of the land. It is in the capital city of the land," he said on Sunday.

"It is a final court and we should maintain the integrity of the Supreme Court."

However, CJI was of the view that the court can be restructured to increase the efficiency and deal with large number of pending cases.

Last year the law commission had suggested for setting up of four regional benches of the apex court in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai and recommended that the Apex Court’s Delhi branch should be turned into Constitutional Bench.

The Law Ministry had sought opinion of Attorney General GE Vahanvati in this regard who also opposed to the idea.
