Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has asked Central Bureau of Investigation to pursue corruption prevailing in higher echelons in the government. Dr Manmohan Singh said the perception that big fish escape punishment must change and the premier investigation agency should act swiftly and without fear. He said trials should be conducted expeditiously and judgments delivered quickly.
Inaugurating a conference of Central Bureau of Investigation and state anti corruption bureau heads meet in New Delhi he said corruption in our public life weakens institutions of governance and also hurts economic growth. He said corruption discourages foreign investments and it tarnishes the country's image.
The Prime minister said the poor are also disproportionately hurt because of this menace. Dr Singh said though the world respects India's democracy but pervasive corruption in the country tarnishes its image.
