The Government today released a five-rupee commemorative coin on Mother Teresa to mark her centenary birth celebrations. Releasing it in New Delhi today, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee gave the first coin and a copy of a souvenir to President Pratibha Patil. It is believed that Mother Teresa had just five rupees when she started her mission in Kolkata.

Speaking on the occasion, the President Mrs. Patil said that Mother Teresa was a symbol of hope to the destitute, the sick, the terminally ill and those who were abandoned by their families.

Describing her as the noblest soul of all times, the President said that Mother Teresa was the epitome of compassion and she served selflessly to spread the message of love throughout her life through her work. Mrs Patil said that Mother Teresa was truly the embodiment of the word Mother in its fullest, truest and complete sense. The President said that Mother Teresa left a deep impact on the world and she showed the way for all to lead life more humanely and meaningfully.
