More than 60 people killed in the accident
Authorities fear that this number could go up as some of the passengers remained critical. 60 people were killed and over 90 passengers injured when a train in high speed tore through the rear of another at the Sainthia station in Bhirbhum district of West Bengal. Officials say that the train coming from behind overshot its signal.

Among the dead were 39 men, eight women and two babies, railway officials said.

Driver M C Dey and assistant driver N K Mandal of the Sealdah-bound Uttarbanga Express, which collided with the Ranchi-bound Vananchal Express, were among the dead in the accident.

The guard of the Vananchal Express A Mukherjee also died in the accident. The impact was so severe that the roof of one of the compartments flung to the road over bridge across the tracks. This place is some 191 kms from Kolkata, capital of West Bengal.

He also did not rule out sabotage, which Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee hinted on Monday morning when she said "we have doubts about the cause of the accident, the second in West Bengal in two months".
