The union and state governments were on high alert given the sensitivity of the issue. However, barring some small protest and demonstration no untoward incident was reported from any part of the country.

Police detained almost a dozen Shiv Sena workers for burning the effigy of Justice MS Liberhan in Faizabad.

On the direction of central government Uttar Pradesh administration has arranged tight security in the state, particularly in Ayodhya, Faizabad, Varanasi and Mathura.

Ayodhya-Faizabad area was turned into a virtual fortress.

Media reported that police detained 600 people in various parts of country to maintain law and order. These arrests have been made from Ayodhya and Chennai, Varanasi and other cities.
